Procedures

We offer the following procedures to patients at the Kensington Vision and Research Centre:

Prosthetic Replacement of the Ocular Surface Ecosystem (PROSE) is a highly specialized therapeutic lens that treats a number of corneal diseases, and relieves pain while improving vision. PROSE may be an option for patients who have failed medical and surgical interventions. Kensington Vision and Research Centre is the first Canadian site to offer PROSE to patients.

Corneal collagen Cross-linking is an eye procedure that strengthens the cornea if it's been weakened by keratoconus, other corneal diseases, or a complication of laser eye surgery.

Corneal Cross-linking can help maintain the current level of vision and is meant to prevent vision from worsening. The procedure strengthens a weak or thin cornea with a combination of vitamin B2 solution and a controlled UV light.

Retinal injections

Retinal injections are used to administer medications to treat a variety of conditions such as diabetic retinopathy. During an injection, your surgeon will place the medication directly into the space in the back of the eye called the vitreous cavity. Typically, patients feel pressure, with little or no pain during the injection. The entire process takes about 3-5 minutes.

Retinal laser:

Your eye surgeon may suggest this treatment to prevent a retinal tear or hole to progress into a retinal detachment.

During the procedure the surgeon directs a laser beam into the eye through the pupil. The laser fuses the retina to underlying tissue.

Glaucoma laser:

Your eye surgeon may suggest this procedure if you are susceptible to high pressure due to the anatomy of your eye or if medications are not lowering the eye pressure. High eye pressure may cause glaucoma, which is an eye disease that causes vision loss.

During the procedure, laser energy is applied to drain fluid from the eye to decrease eye pressure.

Chalazions:

A chalazion is a painless bump on your eyelid, it can result from healed internal styes (cyst-like eyelid bumps). In the case of a persistent chalazion, your eye doctor may recommend this procedure to remove the chalazion without visible scarring.

Pterygium removal

A pterygium is a growth that covers the white part of your eye over the cornea, that is often shaped like a wedge. Your surgeon may recommend surgery to remove the pterygium if it interferes with your vision or for cosmetic purposes. Please note that some of these oculoplastics procedures are not covered by OHIP. Please speak to your physician about any related costs.
