Volunteers like Vishal bring a special warmth and connection to Kensington Gardens, our long-term care home. As a Friendly Visitor, Vishal enhances the well-being of Gardens residents. Learn more about his volunteering experience below.
Why do you volunteer at Kensington Health?
Vishal: Volunteering at the Gardens as a Friendly Visitor is my little way to give back to society. Sometimes, I might be the only visitor a resident has during the week, which is deeply humbling. Volunteering serves as soul food and gives me a strong feeling of gratitude for being able to help out in a meaningful way.
What is one of your most cherished experiences during your time as a volunteer here?
Vishal: My most cherished moment so far has been when I offered to play a favourite album on my phone, as the resident didn’t have a phone or tablet and couldn’t do so on their TV, as it wasn’t in English. The resident’s eyes lit up and they requested more songs from their college days. Then, the resident sang for their spouse of over 40 years (and counting)! When I signed off for the day, the resident smiled, thanked me for coming, and said, “You made my day today!” That brought pure joy.
Vishal’s experience is a reminder of how a simple gesture can create moments of connection and joy, leaving a lasting impact on both the resident and volunteer. Thank you for your dedication, Vishal!
