From Nurse to Leader: Jay Gill’s Journey to a PhD and Beyond

Balancing a full-time role in healthcare while pursuing a PhD is no small feat, but for Amarjot (Jay) Gill, it was a challenge he embraced wholeheartedly. As a nurse leader at The Gardens at Kensington Health, our long-term care home, Jay has dedicated his career to supporting residents, loved ones and staff. This ignited his passion and interest in advancing research focused on enhancing quality of life in long-term care settings.

Recently, Jay celebrated two major achievements: completing his PhD and stepping into a new leadership role as Manager of After Hours Operations at Kensington Health. On top of that, his research was recently published in the Journal of Advanced Nursing and Nurse Educator, respected peer-reviewed journals.

A Passion for Research and Care
Jay’s research journey began at the Gardens, where he explored ways to improve the well-being of long-term care residents. His work focused on practical, evidence-based solutions that enhance quality of life, an area that aligns closely with Kensington Health’s commitment to excellence in patient-centered care.

"Research isn’t just about publishing papers," Jay says. "It’s about finding solutions that improve patient care and enhance the experience for residents and families."

His recent publications in the Journal of Advanced Nursing and Nurse Educator are a testament to his dedication to advancing knowledge in the field. Research like Jay’s doesn’t just live in academic journals, it shapes how healthcare providers deliver care, making a tangible difference in the lives of residents and families.

Growing at Kensington Health
Jay has been with Kensington Health for years, most recently as a Nurse Manager. His new role as Manager of After Hours Operations is an exciting next step. He will oversee critical functions across the organization outside of regular hours, ensuring smooth operations and strong support for staff and residents.

"Kensington has always encouraged me to grow, whether through leadership opportunities or supporting my research,” he says. "This new role is another way for me to contribute to the organization and the people we care for."

A Culture That Empowers
Kensington Health has long been a place where passion meets opportunity. Jay’s journey reflects Kensington’s belief in empowering employees to grow, whether through achieving higher education, exploring research opportunities, or stepping into leadership roles.

At Kensington, we know that great care starts with great people and supporting those people in their professional journey benefits not only our staff, but also the residents and loved ones we serve every day.

"I never felt like I had to choose between my career and my education," Jay says. "Kensington gave me the flexibility and encouragement to pursue both."

Congratulations, Jay, on these incredible achievements!
