As a medical radiation technologist at Kensington Health’s Diagnostic Imaging Services, Vishant Rana understands the profound impact empathy can have on patient care. In his role, Vishant performs diagnostic imaging scans, such as X-rays, to support diagnoses, but knows that his work encompasses much more than that.
“The most important thing is to make sure patients feel safe and comfortable,” he says. “I always try to connect with them, understand their concerns, and do whatever I can to ease their anxiety.”
Working in healthcare, Vishant is no stranger to encountering patients that may be nervous or uncomfortable as they prepare for their exams. As he shares, there can be anxiousness when facing unknowns, especially when it comes to health. But that’s why he knows that showing empathy and compassion to his patients matters that much more. “I try to put myself in their shoes – if I was the one getting the exam, how would I want to be treated?”

This mindset has led to many meaningful moments for him, even recalling one time where he made a difference in a patient’s experience. Following a recent car accident, a patient was still dealing with the mental and physical toll when she came in for her exam. He knew immediately that he wasn’t only there to perform the scan, but to also listen and provide her comfort and support. As he asked simple questions, like “you must have been through a lot, how are you feeling,” he could see a wave of appreciation come over her, even bringing her to tears. “She was so grateful, saying she had never met someone like me before.”
As a not-for profit organization, dedicated to community-delivered care, empathy is at the centre of everything we do. For us at Kensington Health, we recognize that care is more than receiving medical attention – it’s about providing the people we serve the opportunity to live better, fuller lives. For our team members here, it all starts with taking the opportunity to listen, ensuring they feel heard, seen, respected, and valued.
