On the site formerly known as The Doctors Hospital, Kensington Health has been deeply rooted in the Kensington community for more than half a century, pioneering ambulatory, residential and community care in Toronto.
For the past 20 years, Kensington Health has expanded to impact the lives of our residents, patients and clients and their families on a daily basis, offering high-quality healthcare, and specialized caregiver and bereavement support.
The Sisterhood of St. John the Divine opened the first surgical hospital for women in Toronto, on the site of Kensington’s campus. For more than 62 years, the sisters provided medical care for poor and needy women regardless of race and religion. When St. John’s Surgical Hospital closed its doors to the public, the sisters continued to provide services to the geriatric community in Kensington until 1953.
In 1954, the Raxlen brothers, who grew up in the Kensington community, acquired the building from Sisterhood of St. John the Divine and opened The Doctor's Hospital. The Doctors Hospital was founded with a commitment to serve the diverse community and cultures of the Kensington area. Supported by The Doctors Hospital Foundation, the hospital provided care for thousands of people of all backgrounds, cultures, religions and means.
In 1998, The Doctors Hospital was ordered to close and all of its programs were transferred to The Toronto Western Hospital. Subsequently, The Doctors Hospital Foundation needed to find a new way to continue The Doctors Hospital’s legacy of meeting the healthcare needs of the community. In 1998 The Doctors Hospital Foundation changed its name to The Kensington Foundation and built The Kensington Health Centre, embarking on a new era of not-for-profit health care delivery, providing compassionate, supportive and responsive care.
In 2000, in order to meet the growing need for long-term care in the Toronto, the Kensington Foundation decided to build Kensington Gardens on the very site where The Doctors Hospital once stood. In 2002, a 200 bed, non-profit, long-term care facility, opened its doors to its first resident. Two years later, the Foundation continued their expansion and added a new building with 150 beds, totaling 350 long-term care beds.
In 2006, Kensington Health opened the Kensington Eye Institute, an Ambulatory Academic Centre of Excellence for cataract surgery. The goal was to reduce cataract wait times for people in the community. The need for a cataract surgery facility was immense. Patients would often spend the majority, if not all, of their day at a hospital for cataract surgery. The Kensington Eye Institute aimed to decrease those wait times by providing an efficient and accessible service to patients in Toronto. Kensington Eye Institute would later increase their scope of surgical services to include glaucoma surgery, retina surgery and corneal transplants. Later on, in 2008, the Kensington Research Institute was incorporated to fund research on eye diseases, issues related to senior’s quality of life, palliative care and endoscopy.
In 2009, recognizing the need to improve access for patients requiring screening colonoscopy and gastroscopy, Kensington health expanded to include Kensington Screening Clinic. The screening clinic focused on improving patient experience with better access to high-quality and efficient clinical care.
In 2010, Kensington Hospice, a 10-bed palliative care residence on the site of the historical Chapel of St. John the Divine, opened. The chapel, since its opening in 1888, has been repurposed several times throughout its history and has been recognized as a historical landmark. After years of disuse, Kensington Health and the local community gave the chapel a new purpose, Kensington Hospice, Toronto’s only residential hospice.
In 2014, Kensington Vision and Research Centre was opened as a division of Kensington Eye Institute. Recognizing the need for an academic eye institute advancing patient care in ophthalmology, the Kensington Vision and Research Centre opened offering clinical, diagnostic, and ancillary vision services as well as leading critical eye health research.
In 2015, The Eye Bank of Canada (Ontario Division) joined Kensington Health. Since 1955, The Eye Bank of Canada has played a significant role in addressing the need in Ontario for eye-tissue surgeries by becoming responsible for the collection, processing and distribution of donated human eyes and tissue for sight-saving transplants.
In 2015, the Second Mile Club joined Kensington Health, offering community support services to older adults, adults living with disabilities and caregivers within Toronto. Established in 1937, The Second Mile Club of Toronto has been providing community support services to Toronto for over 80 years.
In 2016, the Kensington Diagnostic Imaging Centre was opened, providing patients with rapid access to ultrasound, x-ray and bone mineral density, breast imaging and biopsy services.
Kensington Health is continuing to evolve as a not-for-profit, community-based model of specialized healthcare services that creates consistently better health outcomes by tirelessly pursuing the best ways to respond to unmet health needs within the communities we serve.
