Finding joy in an unexpected place

May 31, 2018

Doug the Hospice dog is a gentle, responsive, affectionate and intelligent Havanese puppy. Doug even has his own book entitled "Doug the Hospice Dog", and all proceeds go towards supporting the Hospice.

Valerie would have never thought herself to be a dog-person. But while caring for her late husband Bryan, during his time at Kensington Hospice, a familiar ball of fur would constantly bring happiness to the couple. Doug the hospice dog, a Havanese puppy owned by Debbie Emmerson, the Director of Hospice Care, is part of the team every day.

Bryan was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2009. He spent seven weeks at Kensington Hospice before he died in 2012. During Bryan’s care at the hospice, the couple found comfort in Doug, who would spend hours playing, jumping and showing affection to the couple.

“I remember that Doug would run into the room to play and hang out with us,” said Valerie. “It was a good diversion from what was happening with Bryan.” Doug became much more than just a friend, but also a companion in Valerie and Bryan’s battle. He left a loving impression on the couple.

When asked about Kensington Hospice, Valerie was quick to praise not only Doug, but also the staff and volunteers who assisted her during Bryan’s stay. The palliative care team consists of nurses, physicians, a social worker, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists and other health care professionals, as well as volunteers.

“I stayed over most nights while Bryan was at the Hospice, and the staff helped us tremendously, they’re all incredible,” said Valerie. And while the staff played a crucial role in assisting Valerie, she was also amazed at the dedication of the volunteers. “The number of volunteers is astounding. It’s very difficult to support others but the help that the volunteers provide is unbelievable.”

Unexpected addition to the family

Doug had such a tremendous impact on Valerie that she wanted her own “Doug” by her side at all times. Valerie adopted Max, a Havanese puppy that is loving and playful.

“I used to be a cat-person, but the love Doug showed me made me want a dog,” said Valerie. “Cats are wonderful, but I had no idea how much joy dogs can give you.”

Now, Valerie has two dogs, recently adopting another. The two dogs love each other and are constantly play-fighting. “It’s like WrestleMania with the two of them,” describes Valerie.

Looking towards the future

Sometimes Max reminds Valerie of her time at Kensington. “I’m grateful for Kensington Hospice, I don’t know how I would’ve handled everything without them.”

Valerie was happy to hear that Kensington Hospice will be undergoing a nine-bed expansion in the near future.

“It’s wonderful that an expansion is happening. It’s an amazing concept that helps others. Kensington Hospice is special. More families will be able to receive compassionate care in their time of need.”
