Andrew’s Story

"Death is the ultimate taboo. No one wants to think about it, much less talk about it. But for everyone, there comes a time when we, or someone we care about, will face an illness or injury that prompts the need for end-of-life decisions. And when that day came for my husband, Andrew McCarthy, I cannot begin to tell you how grateful we were for the existence of The Kensington Hospice.

Andrew received his terminal prognosis last August and he was given 2-3 months to live. We began discussing options with his palliative care physician, Dr. Roger Ghoche, who told us that The Kensington Hospice would be opening shortly and something we might want to consider. After Dr. Ghoche left the room, Andrew turned to me and said, "This place sounds too good to be true.” It wasn't.

The hospice and the people that work – and volunteer – there are remarkable. They made it possible for us to create so many beautiful moments over the course of Andrew's stay. Whether it was helping to organize a visit to our lake house in Prince Edward County, arranging a cello trio for our Christmas dinner, or locating someone to play the famous Six String Nation Voyageur guitar on short notice, these moments were transformed into indelible memories that will stay with me always.

While Andrew went to the hospice to die, he really went there to live. He was able to share meaningful good byes with family and friends, and pass along a rich legacy of wit and wisdom. I have no doubt that the reason Andrew lived twice as long as expected was because of the incredible care he received at the hospice.

I know I speak on behalf of the families and residents when I tell you how exceptionally grateful we are that Kensington Health had the wisdom, leadership and commitment to create the Hospice. It's a tremendous gift to the community: thank you for creating an outstanding oasis of care, kindness and compassion."
