Lucia Rocha (right) is the Family Council President at Kensington Gardens. She is also a patient at the Kensington Eye Institute and a client at the Second Mile Club. Have you met Lucia Rocha? This high-spirited woman is a familiar face at Kensington. You will often see her with a radiant smile chatting with residents, staff, and everyone she encounters.
“I’m a simple person,” she says with a laugh. Nonetheless, Lucia is very involved with the community including the Portuguese community, and the City of York. She recently helped organized the Portuguese parade.
Many know Lucia as the President of Family Council at Kensington Gardens. Lucia’s mother is 94 years old and has been a resident here since the north building opened, 13 years ago. But lately, Lucia has been benefiting from some of the other services Kensington Health has to offer.
In addition to supporting families with loved-ones in long-term care, she and her husband are also clients at the Second Mile Club, and participate in a number of activities offered to its members.
“After stopping by to check out a class, I was hooked,” says Lucia. “I was so impressed with all of the activities available to us. Now my husband takes a few classes there a week and absolutely loves it.”
Lucia also recently became a patient at the Kensington Eye Institute for cataract surgery.“When I needed to get some eye procedures done, I thought, if I have to do that, I might as well do it at Kensington,” says Lucia. “After my procedure, I felt very cared for, and had three people checking in on me.”
After experiencing Kensington Health as a family member, client, and patient, Lucia noticed a common thread through all of the different entities.
Lucia’s energy and passion to support the Kensington community is contagious. She even went into a Family Council meeting hours after her eye surgery.
“If you have the right team working with you, you can do anything” she says.
“Everything you need is here at Kensington, I’ll recommend it to everyone.”
